Work on long-awaited improvements to the interchange of Ga. 400 and  Interstate 85 in Buckhead will begin this summer, after the state awarded a  $21.4 million contract for the project.

The contract, announced by the Georgia Department of Transportation on  Monday, calls for the construction of northbound ramps connecting southbound  motorists on 400 with I-85 and southbound drivers on I-85 with Ga. 400. The  ramps were left off of the project when the interchange was built in the early  1990s.

“This project will improve the functionality of both Georgia 400 and I-85,” state Commissioner of Transportation Vance Smith said in a  prepared statement. “And it will improve all of this ‘connecting’ traffic from  Buckhead’s busy surface streets. We’ll improve mobility on two major freeways  and in a major residential, business and retail center. It’s a win-win-win.”

The project will be financed with revenue from the Ga. 400 toll, which was  renewed last September in separate votes of the State Transportation Board and  State Road and Tollway Authority.

The toll had been scheduled to expire this summer, when the original bonds  from the early 1990s will be paid off.

The contract went to Archer Western Contractors Ltd.  of Atlanta, which is scheduled to complete the project by January  2013.
